Back to Flat by Nicole Valentin
In the world of web and mobile design, simplicity is in! Since the unveiling of Apple’s new mobile software iOS 7, there has been a large shift from eye-popping gradients and shadows to crisp lines and bold typography to create a new “flat” user experience.
What caused the shift? Well, we’re constantly filtering tons of information every day. From our smart phones, to our tablets, to our laptops, to our TVs – our brains are overloaded with information vying for the top spot. The flat design trend creates a “Zen zone” in the midst of all the clutter.
There’s also a bigger focus on content as well. We want useful information, whether we’re looking up reviews for a new restaurant or trying to find a great rental property. The clean shapes and bold typography allow the user to zoom in on the content instead of getting caught up in gradients, shadows, and shiny buttons. It’s OK for a website or app to have cool effects and new features, but if the user doesn’t find what they’re looking for, it’s useless.
Does that mean you have to drop what you’re doing and hire new designers to revamp your website? Not at all! You can focus on providing thoughtful, informational content that will keep your audience coming back for more.
